Matters Football: The European Show

Monday Blues!! Why do we carry this negative vibe against every Monday ever? With yet another weekend, which honestly felt like it was six seconds long, whizzing by, this one in particular wasn’t short of excitements… well at least on a footballing perspective!

It was the commencement of Europe’s most elite football club tournament as players of various teams took to empty stadia, and fans to crowded living room (oh corona…), to Battle it out for a place in the next stage of the Uefa and Europa leagues respectively.

The Europa league had no surprises as the teams we hoped would, did, with Manchester united, Wolvehampton Wanderes and Inter-Milan all progressed to the semis. The Uefa league however had all sorts of drama and heartburn reserved.

First was the much awaited clash between the blues (bruises) of London, Chelsea, against the reds of Munich. The Londoners had a gargantuan task at hand of overturning a three-goal deficit, having conceded at their own turf. The return match proved indifferent as the Bavarians hammered the last nail on the Chelsea casket with a four-goal thumping. Leaving Man-city as the only English side left in the competition.

The “Citizens” had their work cut-out when they were handed Real Madrid in the draws. Two matches later, it was Pep’s boys matching over the La Liga champions to the semis.

I remember having a debate over a month ago about who would win, and I said to this friend of mine-Saka- that saw City as favorites besides Bayern. My argument was since they were to be banned from the competition, they would play their hearts out to crash out in style. The ban was eventually lifted. None of my fellow ran thought City could do a double against the Los Blancos, but alas, you guys owe me!

From the Catalan, Messi pulled a “Messi” on Napoli to book Barcelona a spot while the Old Lady of Turin, Juventus, suffered a shocker in the hands of an under-dogged Lyon, despite a brace form Cristiano Ronaldo. Meaning that Barcelona, City, Bayern and Lyon remains as the last four from the initial 32.

Am hearting Wolves to win the Europa league, although I would bet money on the Italians Inter and City Uefa league! What say you?
